Mom boys Monday Brittany simmons In 10 years practicing as a Registered Dietitian, I have encountered so many moms that have put themselves on the backburner to give their kids a wonderful life. We can give our kids a wonderful life and ourselves too.

I understand what “mom guilt” feels like. But for us moms to show up for our families, we have to take care of ourselves mentally and physically.

Brittany and her childI have 2 words of advice for every mom: PRIORITIZE YOURSELF. You are still alive and it’s time to live a life that makes you feel alive!

You are an awesome mom and go above and beyond daily for your family. But what awesome things have you done for yourself lately? If you are having trouble thinking of one good thing then it’s time make a change. Please don’t wait until you are falling apart, your back is aching, or you no longer feel sexy. That’s frankly not fair for you at all.

I am truly blessed with a loving husband and the sweetest daughter. Regardless, I need to take care of myself so I can reciprocate the love and care they show me.

For all the moms who are struggling to prioritize their health, I want to offer you 2 real strategies I use:

  • Find something that is yours and all yours. Find that “me time” even if you have to wake up at 5 AM to enjoy it.
  • It’s okay to say no and ask for some assistance!

Yoga poseFind something that makes you feel alive – for me, it’s yoga and eating healthy. Yoga isn’t just a physical workout but also a mental practice. You focus on your breath, your gaze so you don’t lose your balance, and you relax the body in Savasana telling yourself that it’s okay to be exactly where you are and who you are. It’s okay to take the time for yourself to find that out.

There are more paths to getting healthier besides just nutrition and exercise such as reducing stress, improving sleep, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol.

Moms, it’s time for all of us to feel alive again. Prioritize yourself, stop feeling guilty, and practice saying no to things that don’t serve your purpose in life. If it doesn’t feed your soul, let it go with a smile on your face.
