Introducing TEAMBIRTH at Singing River Health System
What mom doesn’t want a say in her labor and delivery experience? Gulf Coast Moms got the chance to attend the TeamBirth Launch event and we are thrilled that Singing River is offering this initiative on the Coast!
A central component of the TeamBirth model is a shared whiteboard located in all labor and delivery rooms to outline care plans and progress for the patient and the baby that serves as an ongoing shared reference for the team. The full care team, of which the person giving birth and their support person are an integral part, meet frequently throughout labor and delivery in huddles to make sure all parties are aware of the patient’s preferences, symptoms, and experiences and to set clear expectations.

Research indicates that failures in communication between providers and between providers and patients accounts for up to 90 percent of preventable injuries during childbirth. TeamBirth was developed to address these gaps in communication to ensure that people giving birth and the clinicians who are caring for them have shared input and understanding into decisions during labor and delivery.
TeamBirth was developed by Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA. TeamBirth now has been implemented in more than 28 hospitals around the country, collectively involving more than 1,500 clinicians and more than 67,000 mothers and babies.

Childbirth & Breastfeeding Classes
Singing River’s Free Childbirth Classes
At Singing River’s free childbirth class, held each month at either Pascagoula or Ocean Springs Hospital, expectant moms learn about the stages of labor, delivery, and recovery as well as the types of anesthesia available. They’ll also learn about their newborn’s appearance, general newborn care, and safe sleep practices.
Singing River’s Breastfeeding Support
Breastfeeding is a great option for mothers and babies, but it’s not always easy. That’s why Singing River has multiple ways for moms to get help with breastfeeding. During the free monthly breastfeeding class at Pascagoula or Ocean Springs hospital, they discuss breastfeeding basics.
Free Lactation Consultants
Singing River offers moms FREE, one-on-one consultations with Board Certified Lactation Consultants. Same-day appointments are available in person as well as over Zoom! Call (228) 818-1172 to connect with a lactation expert.

Community Breastfeeding Resources
Attend a MILC League support group meeting. These free events are for pregnant and breastfeeding families and offer support from specially-trained staff, opportunities for attendees to share experiences, make friends, and have open-forum discussions. Meetings are held throughout the Gulf Coast:

Pelvic Therapy
Has your body been through the wringer? Pelvic pain during pregnancy and after giving birth is common, but it’s not normal. Prioritize healing yourself after the amazing feat of childbirth by seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist. Regular screenings are an important part of our healthcare! Below are the recommended guidelines for scheduling your screenings.
Annual Wellness – All Ages
Stay healthy by seeing your doctor for an annual wellness exam. During this appointment, you’ll test your cholesterol, your blood pressure, go over your medications, take care of any needed immunizations, and get referrals for other specialists or tests you may need (like a mammogram).
Cervical Cancer – Age 21
The guidance has changed a little bit about how often a woman needs to get a pap smear, or pap test, to detect any abnormal cells on your cervix. First, if you are planning to get pregnant, it’s a good idea to get your pap test done prior to conceiving. That way, you can have any abnormal cells removed without having to delay a procedure.
● 21-29: pap test once every three years
● 25-29: pap test once every three years or HPV testing alone
● 30-65: pap test and HPV test (co-testing) once every five years, hpv testing alone every
five years, or pap test alone every three years
At Singing River Medical Clinics, the HPV test is given alongside pap tests. Call your clinic for scheduling to connect with a PCP that offers this service. For patients without insurance, the cash cost of both tests together is only $72.
Colorectal Cancer – Age 45
Younger moms are getting colon and rectal cancers at higher and higher rates. In fact, the screening age used to be 50 for colorectal cancer, but now it’s 45, and moms with a higher risk of getting this cancer should start getting their screenings at age 40. There are many ways to screen for colorectal cancer, but the best way is to get a colonoscopy. Singing River Digestive Health operates two state-of-the-art endoscopy centers where you can receive your colonoscopy. Contact your preferred Singing River Digestive Health clinic to get started.
Cardiac CT Screening for Heart Disease – Age 55
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, and it can affect any woman at any age. Therefore, it’s important for all moms to get their risk of heart attack assessed with a cardiac screening. Starting at age 55, all women should get a CT scan of their heart to locate calcium buildup. This plaque may indicate clogs in your arteries. Cardiac CTs are available at all Pascagoula, Ocean Springs, and Singing River Gulfport Hospital imaging departments as well as Singing River Imaging Centers in Ocean Springs and Pascagoula. For patients without insurance, a Cardiac CT is only $100.
Breast Cancer – Age 40
Starting at age 40, women should receive yearly mammograms. While receiving your 3D digital mammogram, you’ll also receive a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment that will determine if you need any additional screening such as a breast MRI. Ask your doctor about a mammogram order, and then schedule it at Singing River Imaging Center—designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center by the American College of Radiology.
