I threw out New Year’s Resolutions… but here’s what I did instead.
I spent my whole life, probably like most people, making a bunch of “resolutions” to start on January 1st. Don’t get me wrong, I love setting a good goal and most of the time, the resolutions I made were always about bettering myself in some way! But if I’m being totally transparent, I almost always started to forget about my resolution by the end of February.
Statistically, most people do.
And then, my hyper-competitive personality ended up feeling like a big failure and I didn’t like that either! (I know, I know.. so silly)
In 2020, I actually threw “resolutions” out the window and started two new ideas that were just so much more fun to me and I want to share them with you, too!
Choosing a Word or Words
In 2020, I decided to choose a word to represent a New Year for me! We asked our mom community what word they would choose for 2024 and here is what they had to say:
Present - This mama wants to be more present in the moment in 2024 with her family.
Unplugged - This mama wants to be more intentional about being on her phone or social media around her kids.
Grace- This mama wants to give herself and her kids more grace and understanding in 2024.
Patience- Several mamas chose this one and I think we can all relate! It’s so easy to live so rushed that patience runs thin, so these mamas just want to work on having more patience!
Thriving - This mama says that society makes it seem like everything moms do is “just surviving” but what if we changed the perspective to everything that we are doing to THRIVE? It’s there! We love this perspective change!
Peace- This mama wants her 2024 to be full of peace in her life, her family’s life, and in her decisions!
Undivided Attention - This mama said that she sees how fast time is flying with her littles and she wants to make sure that she is offering times of undivided attention in a world where we are so surrounded by distractions!
Outside - This mama said she is committing to getting outside and soaking up that sunshine with her family!
Quality Time - This mama told us that she really just wants to set aside time this year to focus on quality time with her family!
Faithful - This mama said she wants to go into 2024 full of faith and faithfulness. She said she doesn’t want to spend another year doubting or feeling fearful!
Connection - This mama said she wants to build solid, deep connections and relationships with family and friends in 2024!
Intentional - This mama told us that she wants to be more intentional with her time and intentional with how her family chooses to spend their time!
Gratitude - This mama said that she wants to spend 5 minutes every morning focusing on all that there is to be thankful for to set her days up for success!
“No” - This mama said she knows how this sounds haha but she wants to be more intentional with not feeling the need to say yes to everything and everyone, but instead prioritize and be okay with saying no!
Learning Something New
I switched it up again in 2021, 2022, and 2023. It was honestly so much fun and I challenged myself in so many ways! I ended the year trying things I probably would have never tried otherwise and I fell in love with so many new things, made new friends, and developed new hobbies! In 2021, I committed to baking something new every week and it became a huge passion!
In 2022 and 2023, I decided I would learn a new skill every month. Of course, there are so many different ways you could do this, but some of the things I chose in those years were:
Making Sourdough Bread
Learning to sew buttons back on clothes
Plant an herb garden
Start an outside garden in the Spring
Make a cake from scratch
Knit something
Start a Recipe Journal of my favorites
Learn a new soup recipe
Start a compost for the garden
Plant a fruit tree
Build a chicken coop with my husband from scratch
Baking new things
I hope these ideas bring you some refresh to your New Year! We would love for you to share anything you try or want to try from this blog!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!
