Movie Review: The King of Kings by Angel Studios – A Beautiful, Powerful Movie Every Family Should See
If you’re anything like me, you're always looking for movies that your kids will actually enjoy—and that you don’t have to cringe through. And honestly? That’s a rare combo. But Angel Studios’ latest release, The King of Kings, completely blew me away.
We just saw it in theaters this weekend, and I’m still thinking about it. It was absolutely stunning—from the visuals to the music to the message. It’s hands-down one of the best faith-based children’s films I’ve ever seen. And more than that, it was a beautiful, reverent, and engaging retelling of the life of Jesus that had every kid in our group (from toddlers to tweens) locked in from start to finish.
Why Kids of All Ages Will Love It
Let’s start here, because this is what impressed me the most—it’s so well done that even little kids stay interested. There’s a warmth and energy in the animation that pulls them in immediately. The film opens with a sense of wonder and never loses momentum. My preschooler was mesmerized, and my older kids kept whispering “That’s in the Bible! I remember that!”
The pacing is spot on. Scenes are short enough to hold younger attention spans, but deep enough to keep older kids (and adults) thinking. There’s humor sprinkled in, moments of awe and wonder, and just enough action to keep the story moving—all while staying completely true to Scripture.
And the music? Beautiful. Emotional. Worshipful. One song in particular during Jesus’ ministry hit me hard. (You’ll know the one when you hear it.)
A Faithful Retelling — Truthful and Kid-Friendly
What really sets The King of Kings apart is how faithfully it follows the biblical story, without watering anything down—but also without being too heavy for children. The miracles, the parables, the heart of Jesus’ ministry—it’s all there. And it’s all told in a way that makes it click for kids.
And yes, the film includes the crucifixion—and they portray it with such honesty and tenderness. It’s powerful, but not traumatizing. You feel the weight of what Jesus endured, but it’s shown in a way that children can understand. My kids weren’t scared—they were reflective. And that opened the door to a beautiful conversation on the way home about why Jesus had to die and what it means for us.
Jesus Didn’t Just Die For Us… He Died As Us
One of the things I appreciated most was how the movie didn’t just say “Jesus died for our sins,” but made it clear that He became sin on our behalf. That He stood in our place.
It’s a deep truth, but the movie found a way to show it in a way kids could really grasp: Jesus, perfect and blameless, took on everything we were owed so we could walk free. He didn’t just save us from sin—He took our place.
That’s something we talk about a lot in our home, and it was amazing to see it communicated so clearly and gently through this film.
Make This Easter Weekend Truly Special
If you're looking for ways to keep Christ at the center of your Easter celebration, this film is a perfect addition. The King of Kings isn’t just entertainment—it’s a beautiful reminder of why Easter matters. Between the egg hunts and chocolate bunnies, carve out time to go see this as a family. Let it be a moment to pause, reflect, and remember what Jesus did for us.
It’s an experience that will stir your child’s heart—and probably yours too.
Mom Tips for a Smooth Movie Theater Trip with Littles
Taking small kids to the theater can feel like a gamble—so here are a few tips that helped us:
Pick a matinee – Less crowded, more family-friendly, and usually cheaper.
Bring a “snack bag” – Quiet snacks like puffs, goldfish, or soft granola bars are your best bet.
Dress cozy – Theaters are always freezing. Hoodies, blankets, or even small stuffed animals help kids settle in.
Talk beforehand – Let them know what the movie is about, and that you’ll talk afterward. Helps them stay focused!
Bring tissues – For real. You’ll probably need them.

Final Thoughts
The King of Kings is more than a movie—it’s a worship experience, a Bible lesson, and a conversation starter all in one. I’m so thankful this exists for our kids. It’s rare to find something this high-quality that speaks so clearly to the heart of the gospel—and to the heart of a child.
