Read Across America
What is Read Across America?
Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2nd, the birthday of children’s author, Dr. Seuss. Reading is an important skill that is essential for success in school and in life. The program was created by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1997 and is celebrated to encourage children of all ages to read. Read Across America is celebrated in schools, libraries, and communities across the United States, and is marked by special events and activities that center around reading and literature. Celebrating Read Across America is an opportunity to promote literacy and a love of reading among children and to encourage them to explore the world of books and encourage a love and passion for reading.
Read Across America week promotes the goal of schools in every community which is to create communities of lifelong readers. In the words of Dr. Seuss, “You’re never to old, to wacky, to wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” Children of all ages love to be read too.
